2020 Toyota Sequoia Technology
The Toyota Safety Sense™ package has earned the accolades of drivers from Plainfield to Wheaton, and it’s not difficult to see why. It boasts features including tracking movement in your surroundings, and many can even intervene to prevent collisions! Among these, the Toyota Pre-Collision System is most likely the best known. It works by using a front-facing camera and a laser in order to detect objects in your path and alert you when it’s time to brake. When necessary, it can even bring you to a complete stop automatically. Learn more on how the Toyota Pre-Collision system works in our guide.

How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

While there’s a general sense of what the Toyota Pre-Collision System does, how does it actually function on your day-to-day drives around the Aurora area?

  • As noted above, a Toyota model with the Pre-Collision System comes with a front-facing camera and an invisible laser. It uses these components to measure the distance between your vehicle and whatever obstacle is directly in front of you.
  • Taking your speed into account, the system calculates the likelihood of a collision. If it determines that a collision is likely, your Toyota will send out audiovisual alerts to notify you of the possible danger. You should manually apply the brake as soon as possible.
  • If the alerts do not enable you to slow or stop your vehicle, the Toyota Pre-Collision System may apply the brakes automatically or deploy them at full force with brake assist.

There’s no substitute for careful, attentive driving, but when you’re equipped with the Toyota Pre-Collision System, you’ll enjoy additional protection against the inevitable surprises that can occur on the road.

Pedestrian Detection with the Toyota Pre-Collision System

Several different versions exist of the Toyota Pre-Collision System. With Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS P) or Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS 2.0)–the most common versions of the package–the Toyota Pre-Collision System also includes Pedestrian Detection.

In Toyota vehicles with Pedestrian Detection, an additional grille-mounted system uses a millimeter-wave radar to check your surroundings for smaller objects, which the initial PCS might miss. By examining the size, shape, and motion of this smaller object, PD is able to identify vulnerable people and apply the brakes as necessary.

Which Toyota Models Offer the Pre-Collision System?

Today, drivers in the Naperville area can access the Toyota Pre-Collision System in an extraordinary variety of new Toyota vehicles. PCS is either standard or offered by trim level in each of the following models:

  • Crossovers and SUVs: C-HR, Land Cruiser, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, Sienna
  • Cars, Minivans and Hatchbacks: Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla Hybrid, Prius, Prius Prime, Prius c, Yaris Hatchback

Features That are Accessible with Toyota Safety Sense™

Depending on the model and model year that you settle on, you can receive one of three available Toyota Safety Sense™ packages with your purchase. Here are the features included with the newest and most comprehensive version, Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS 2.0):

  • Automatic High Beams (AHB)
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or Full-Speed Range DRCC
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)

The most common package is currently Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS P). This grouping includes most of the features listed above, minus LTA and RSA. Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS C) only includes PCS, LDA, and AHB, but there are only a few models that still offer this package.
