There’s no doubt that owning a car is an exciting endeavor, yet at times, it can also be confusing. Knowing when to get your oil changed, how to check your tire pressure, or even why you should pay attention to your gauge cluster are all important, along with countless other ins and outs to car ownership and longevity. Luckily, Toyota of Naperville has you covered! Here, you’ll be able to find answers for common car questions.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

Keeping your tires properly inflated is crucial, especially because most tire damage and wear stems from driving on tires that aren’t entirely full. Experts suggest checking your tire pressure once a month. Follow these steps to quickly and accurately determine your tire pressure:

  1. Check the tire pressure recommendations listed in your vehicle, or in your owner’s manual. There should be specific numbers for front and rear tires.
  2. Remove the cap from the stem on your tire, and insert a tire pressure gauge.
  3. Check out the reading on the gauge, and determine whether it meets the recommendations for your specific model.
  4. If the readings are above or below the listed recommendations, go to a location where there’s an air source to fill the pressure or release the pressure to proper levels.

How to Disconnect Your Phone From Your Vehicle

When it comes time to trade in your current vehicle for a newer Toyota model or return your lease, you should disconnect your phone from your car. The process is quite simple:

Press the button with the phone emblem on the top right corner of your infotainment system.

  1. Tap the ‘Settings’ button, followed by ‘Connect Phone.’ You should then see the phones already paired with the infotainment system appear on the screen.
  2. Hit the ‘Remove’ button, and select the devices you’d like to delete.
  3. Finish by confirming the removal.

Additionally, you’re going to want to delete the destinations, contacts, and address book saved in your navigation:

  1. Go to map mode, and tap the ‘Destination” button.
  2. Select the ‘Address Book’ icon, followed by ‘Options.’
  3. From there, press ‘Delete,’ then ‘Select All,’ and finally confirm the actions, and the system will be clear of your saved information.

How to Pair Your Phone With Bluetooth

Staying connected on the go and paying attention to the road ahead at the same time has never been easier, thanks to advanced technology installed on the latest Toyota vehicles. To pair your phone with Bluetooth, follow these steps:

  1. Go into the settings on your phone and make sure your Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Touch “Apps” on your Toyota’s infotainment screen and click the phone button to proceed with pairing your device.
  3. Through your phone, search for devices, and your Toyota vehicle should pop up.
  4. Enter the passcode displayed on your vehicle’s screen, and press “Pair.”

Your device and vehicle should then be paired, and the connection should automatically upload all of your contacts into the infotainment system. Your phone also might ask you a few questions, like whether you’d like to enable text messaging.

How to Jump Start Your Car

Occasionally, you might find yourself in a situation where your battery has lost power and your car won’t start. There are two ways to jump start your car: one with another vehicle, and another with a portable starter kit.

  1. To start your car with another vehicle using jumper cables, connect the positive and negative ends to the respective terminals on your battery. That means, connecting the positive cable to the positive terminal on the battery, and the negative to the negative terminal on the battery. The black cable will always be negative, and the red will be positive.
  2. Do the same on the other car involved, but the negative cable should be fastened to a secure location, like a metal bolt.
  3. At that point, it’s safe to turn on the vehicle and get it charged.
  4. The second way to jump start your car involves a booster pack, which should be charged all the way before using it on your vehicle. Press the status to see if it is fully charged, first and foremost.
  5. From there, just like with the jumper cables, attach the positive wand to the positive terminal on the battery and the negative to the negative terminal.
  6. Leave the pack attached for five minutes or so, at which point you can start your vehicle. Make sure it runs for a bit.

In either scenario, make sure to drive your vehicle for a bit after jumping it to make sure your battery recharges. Additionally, drivers can maintain their batteries as opposed to jumping them with a trickle charger.
